January 26, 2005: Putting the "hung" in Mwangaguhunga

That was fun, yo!

Last night's WYSIWYG Talent Show, "Please Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood," was a blast, starting off with Rich Villar's heartfelt ode to Puerto Rican home cooking. Guy Brighton wanted us all to know that his blog is ALL fiction, especially if anyone he knows offline is offended by things he says about them, and Jenny Francois's tale of high school longing was nicely punctuated with lots of music and a fine Lloyd Dobler moment. Jon Collins dealt with high school crushes too, except in his case the story was about being the crushee, with a girl who was SO barking up the wrong tree.

Perhaps the most unexpected delight of the evening was Ron Mwangaguhunga's story (Ron, if you don't have a name for the piece yet, I'd like to suggest "Me and My Shadow"). As Jon mentions on his blog, Ron definitely "uses his shyness as a comic weapon" -- here was this quiet, unassuming guy, shy as can be, stock-still and expressionless save the occasional half-smiling twitch at one corner of his mouth, delivering a gut-busting story about streaking through a snobby college ahhhrt pahhhhrty, laden with pop culture and art references. He name-checked Oscar Goldman, even! Loved it.

And the show ended with a bang as the very gezellig Carolyn Castiglia rapping in Dutch. That girl is a frickin' HOOT! (Miss Carolyn, this site might be useful to you in future visits to your hubby's homeland - and I am SO with you about the poop shelf!)

So far Jon's the only one to post his story from last night, although I was also able to find the blog entry Rich expanded upon for his piece last night. As always, I will continue adding links to any pieces from last night that get posted on the peformers' sites, as well as any reviews we find.

* Update: Ron's story is here!

* And Carolyn's story is here!

* Somehow I missed that Carolyn also posted her rundown of the evening and even Googlismed us back!

* Jenny hasn't posted her story, but she does have her own rundown of the evening (complete with post-show MAJOR naughtiness) here!

And one more time - huuuuuuge thanks to Liza and Nichelle for putting this month's show together for us!

January 23, 2005: Calling All Top Models!

Please Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood

Of course, you're all eagerly anticipating this week's latest WYSIWYG Talent Show because you know it's gonna be fantastic as always, right?

Well, there's something else you can get excited about: being a glamorous model for next month's all-star, ass-kicking, body-moving, belly-laughing, cringe-inducing, first-anniversary WYSIWYG Talent Show: Spawn. Of. Worst. Sex. Ever!!

For the show's promo images, we wanna have a few different versions of a close-up of someone's face making a horrible reaction in response to something that's happening "down there" (ahem). And we want you, shameless bloggers of the world, to be included in our gallery of horrors. Here are a couple of examples of what we're going for:

There are two ways you can include yourself in the fun:

  1. Come to this week's show and let us take your picture before or after the show. No need to get naked or anything, so don't be shy.

  2. Send us your photos! (Out-of-towners and foreigners — this means you!) Try to get a good reaction shot of yourself (or have someone take it for you), and send me the full-size original image from your camera. We'll take care of cropping it and getting the color right to match the others.

We'll add images to the web site as they come in, and then we'll include a gallery of all the images on the site and in the show program. C'mon, play along!

January 18, 2005: Coming attractions

Ohh, poor little neglected WYSIWYG blog! Can you ever forgive us? While next week's show has been graciously guest curated by the deelovely misses Liza Sabater of CultureKitchen and Nichelle of Nichelle’s Newsletter, we here at Team WYSIWYG have remained uber-super-duper-hyper-busy putting together our big-ass first anniversary show!

Don't miss either show, 'cause they're both going to rock harder than, uh, granite or something! First up is next week's first WYSIWYG Talent Show of 2005: “Please Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood: Missed Connections and Crossed Wires”!

Tuesday, January 25, at 7:30 p.m. at
Performance Space 122
150 1st Ave. at East 9th St.
Tickets: $7

And mark your calendars NOW for our huuufreakinmongous first anniversary show on February 15 – “Spawn. Of. Worst. Sex. Ever.” featuring some of New York City’s most notorious bloggers’ most notoriously bad bedroom experiences!

More coming on that one soon, promise. Wowsers!
