March 2006
Audacia Ray, who performed at last month's "Worst. Sex. Ever. III" show, is curating "Sex Worker Visions" that opens tonight at NYC's LGBT Community Center. Sponsored by $pread Magazine, a quarterly magazine by and for sex workers and their allies, "Sex Worker Visions" is an exhibition featuring art by sex workers and about the sex industry that will run at the LGBT Community Center David Bohnett Cyber Center at 208 West 13th Street, from March 29 through May 20. Visions kicks off with an opening reception tonight, March 29, from 6 to 9 pm.
Artists include sex activist and educator Heather Corinna, former SuicideGirl and illustrator Molly Crabapple, exotic dancer and photographer Charise Isis (her photo "Narcissus," above, is part of the show), and former prostitute and filmmaker Anne Hanavan, as well as Paul Sarkis and George Pitts's intimate portraits of porn stars. Photographs by Erin Siegal and illustrations by Fly and Cristy Road originally appearing in $pread will also be on display. Sales will benefit the non-profit magazine. A full list of the artists and their pieces is here.
Tonight's event is also the opening night of the Sex Work Matters conference, a joint venture of CUNY and the New School. For $pread, the evening will also mark the start of its second year of publication. In its first year, $pread won Best New Title from the Utne Indepenent Press Awards. The Spring issue of $pread will be available for sale at the reception.
For opening night only, the exhibit will be completely interactive with a webcam video project, "30 Second Sex," masterminded by multimedia artist and erotic professional Melissa Gira and featuring webcam pioneers Ana Voog and Echo Transgression camming from remote locations. Computer monitors around the Cyber Center will display the websites of sex worker rights advocacy groups for the public to peruse. Former call girl Tracy Quan along with sex worker activist Carol Leigh (aka Scarlot Harlot) will be signing copies of their respective books, Diary of a Married Call Girl and Unrepentant Whore.

We've got a bunch of upcoming shows by WYSIWYG folks to tell you about, but first a few bits of news of our own...
First, video clips from February's big anniversary show, "Worst. Sex. Ever. III: When Bad Sex Happens to Good People," are finally online! Click here to check 'em out. And photos from this month's "Starfuckers" show are also online now right here.
Also, like every damned 13-year-old on the planet, WYSIWYG has succumbed: we now have a MySpace page! Won't you be our friend?
Also, we now have a WYSIWYG Talent Show photo pool on Flickr. If you have any pics from the 'WYG on Flickr, please send them to the group!
And finally, after the jump is a little of what some of your favorite WYWSIWYG performers are up to in the coming weeks:
(See the rest of this entry...)
Our first night at Bowery Poetry Club was hella fun, although we're going to have to learn how to pace ourselves a bit with the drinkies. BPC's bartender Uncle Shappy took good care of us and put up with our silliness with marvelous aplomb, and the rest of the BPC staff were all *so* friendly and cool. We ruv it!
The first of two fabulous prizes for the evening was an "American Idol" Season One cd, won by Mike (who also won one of the prizes last month, so we must investigate to figure out how he's rigging the drawings). And one of our performers, the darling Miss Lindsay, actually won the other: a copy of Nicole Ritchie's "novel," The Truth about Diamonds: A Novel (which also has the word "novel" on the cover about 18 times -- maybe someone thought that if they said it enough times it become a REAL novel!). We made her promise to do a full book report for future publication on the WYSIblog, and we're gonna hold her to it!
Not all of the performers have posted about the night's festivities (we'd love to be able to share Derek's dirt about Bea Arthur and Elizabeth Shue, Lindsay's experience stalking-but-not-really-stalking Corey Feldman, or Diana's stories about fan mails written entirely in l33t and the guy who sent her photos of himself in a homemade robot costume with the "man parts" strategically cut out) but some of them have:
* Doug's story is here
* Rachael's rundown is here
* Matthew's thoughts on the night are here
* Amnesia's rundown of the evening is here
* Rachael's rundown is here
Also, Amnesia's friend B-Rad posted about the night here and put up a gallery of photos at Junk Magazine! I also have a few photos up on my Flickr page, right here.
And now there's a review up at Stagebuzz.
As always, more links as I find 'em. Perhaps some of you other bloggers spotted in the audience (like Byrne, Jase, Alexis, Ken, and Ned) will write a bit more? Either way, we had a blast, and we hope to see you next month!
Oof, almost forgot about this!
The Daily Sonic podcast did a feature on WYSIWYG, with sound clips from some of the performances at last month's "Worst. Sex. Ever. III" and a blathery interview from yours truly. It's a little under 19 minutes long. Go check it out (and do keep in mind that some of those bad sex stories are probably a not-safe-for-work kinda thing).
And don't forget tonight's show, "Starfuckers: Close Encounters of the Famous Kind" at Bowery Poetry Club. Come on down!
Mark your calendars right now for the WYSIWYG Talent Show at its new home!
